From the Bed Dweller Let's be clear about a few things. There is only one piece of furniture in the house. And it's mine. You can sleep in it, but it's still mine. I sleep in it too. Plus, I read, watch TV, surf the net, work, talk on the phone and eat in it. I'm trying to figure out how I can cook and bathe in it. If I'm home, I'm probably in bed. If I'm not, I'm working on it. Spending all my time in bed does not mean I'm lazy. It just means that whatever I'm doing, I'm comfortable. Especially if I've been able to avoid getting dressed and am still in my nice comfy pajamas.
What is a Bed Dweller? It's pretty simple, actually. Bed dwellers live in bed. They nest there. The bedroom is arranged so everything except major appliances are within easy reach. These people are all about comfort. They like reclining and things you can do while reclining. And they've learned to do almost everything while reclining.
Let 'Em Stay In Bed One of the nicest things you can do for a bed dweller is not make them get out of bed. Stop by every once in a while and pick up their dishes. Get them another cup of coffee. Bring the form that needs signed to them. They need lots of space around the bed to put books and remotes and note pads, etc. Shelves, stands and little tables within reach of the bed are very important. Also useful: a cordless phone and a power strip or extension cord within easy reach to plug in lamps and laptops. Keep them company now and then. Watch TV in the bedroom instead of the living room. Have your morning coffee in bed too. You might get to like it!

Gift Ideas If it's soft, comfortable and facilitates lounging, they want one. That actually covers a pretty wide range of stuff.
Gift Certificates There are lots of places for good bed dweller stuff. Their local department store probably has any number of things they want. Gift certificates for these places are always appreciated. It doesn't have to be a fancy store. K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Target and their ilk can be good for accessories and such. If you don't know what stores are in their area, or you just prefer to take the online route, these gift certificates are always a good bet for bed dwellers. Books, bedding, dishes - whatever they want they can probably order it through Amazon. Linens 'n Things stocks a great selection of bedding that can be ordered online. Their gift cards come in lots of nice designs any many have $25 minimums. Home Shopping Network Gift Certificates Not only do TV shopping networks have piles of stuff that bed dwellers like, they offer the extra benefit of making it possible to shop from bed! They can even shop for other people, if they want. We like Sears Gift Cards because they never expire. Sears is widely available and their bedding departments have some very nice items.
Small But Special Lavender Linen Mist from Crabtree and Evelyn Lavender sprayed on the sheets is both relaxing and delicious. Your bed dweller will love anointing their linens. It feels luxurious and special without being expensive. A thoughtful gift that won't break the bank. Everybody wins!
Eating In Bed No eating in bed? Forget about it! The true bed dweller can eat crackers, pasta, soup, cookies and, if pressed, barbecued ribs in bed. Plus beverages. They love to settle in with a nice plate of snacks. Munchies Bed dwellers love munchies. Food gift baskets including good cheese, interesting crackers, delicious beverages, meats, cookies, candies and suchlike will be eagerly bundled off to the bedroom to be enjoyed. There are a million places both online and offline to get a variety of both ordinary and specialty foods and local delicacies, or you can even assemble your own with offerings from a good grocery store. We like to raid the Pepperidge Farm and Harry and David outlets near us. If your bed dweller has health issues that affect diet, a basket that meets their special requirements is a great gift. For some online suggestions, try one of the links below. Chocolate recommendations from Spousal Sponsorship Program Serving Trays Carrying a load of snacks and drinks back to bed is much easier with a nice serving tray. There are lots of designs available. A good bed dweller tray is flat with a lip to keep things from sliding off. A large tray is good because it's stable, but not too large or heavy to carry. Handles are nice, but not required. Avoid the "breakfast-in-bed" type trays with legs. A true bed dweller isn't in this for one meal. Trays with legs keep your bed dweller from adjusting their position easily. They also have a higher tendency to tip or allow things to spill. Stick with a good flat tray with a nice design. Most department stores offer a selection of serving trays. For online ordering, try one of the stores listed below. Dishes Bed dwellers need nice plates and cups for all that yummy stuff. Good cups and saucers, mugs and salad or dessert size plates are always welcome. As with many other bed dweller favored items, most local department stores offer good choices. If you want an online option, try these. QVC - Navigate to Cooking & Dining > Tabletop > Dinnerware > Dessert & Salad Plates
Bed Clothes What's the point of living in bed if you don't have pajamas? Pajamas come in lots of styles and fabrics, but keep in mind that the object is comfort. If gifting your bed dweller with PJs, stick to simple styles. Lace is itchy. Transparent fabrics and voluminous cuts are uncomfortable. Cotton is great. So is silk and satin for more luxurious lounging. Both light and heavy weight pajamas are good for different seasons. Look for soft fabrics, bound seams (less itchy) and bottoms with both elastic and a drawstring. They do have to get out of bed on occasion, so don't be afraid of slippers. Big character slippers are cute, but you can't actually walk in them. Consider a nice warm servicable pair of slippers or slipper socks. For a fantastic gift experience, send a PajamaGram! We've received these several times and been delighted each time. Your bed dweller will receive your choice of pajamas from a wide selection beautifully packaged in a keepsake hatbox with several charming little extras tucked in the box. A sure winner!
Pillows Bed dwellers need pillows. All kinds of pillows. They combine different kinds for different purposes. One stack for sitting up to read. Another stack for sleeping. Pretty throw pillows for making the bed sumptuous. New pillows are always fun. Get pillows, not those "bed loungers". Those look good, but if your bed dweller is not exactly the right size, they are not actually very comfortable.
Sheets Bed dwellers can't have too many sets of sheets. You will need to know both the size of the bed and also how "deep" the sheets need to be. Pillowtop and extra thick mattresses are common these days. You don't need to get complete sets. A flat sheet or a couple of pillowcases is just fine, especially if you can't find out the right size. Stick to cotton sheets. Satin (not sateen) is pretty, but not really very comfortable in the long run. Egyptian cotton is the best, but regular cotton is fine if you get a decent thread count. The higher the thread count, the better the sheets. Anything under 350 isn't worth sleeping on. Local department stores usually have a good selection of sheets. If you want to order online, try one of these sites. Sheets at Home Shopping Network
Duvet Covers Duvet covers are a great way to refresh an older comforter or quilt. They are much less bulky than additional comforters so even a space challenged bed dweller can have several. With an endless selection of patterns and fabrics, they are a fun quick way to change the look and texture of their favorite place. Memory Foam Mattress Topper A memory foam mattress topper makes the bed a whole different thing. There are lots of them, but we like the ones from Sleep Warehouse. They are sized properly and are a better quality than other brands. If you do look at other brands, check the density. Higher density numbers mean more support and durability. Our bed dweller loves his. Yours will love one too. |
